Several weeks ago, I had the opportunity to photograph Gertie and Federico’s wedding. They were married on an absolutely gorgeous spring day in Orlando.

Family and friends gathered for a beautiful ceremony at the Cathederal of the Incarnation in the College Park section of Orlando.

After the ceremony, I accompanied the bride and groom to Lake Eola for formal pictures. We then joined the guests at the Embassy Suites on International Drive for a fantastic reception with wonderful food and music.

Special Announcement

April 29, 2010

Next Wednesday I have a special announcement to make. I’m very excited to share this with all of you. So come back on May 5th to see the news.

Last week, I had the chance to shoot some engagement photos at Dr. Phillips Community Park in Orlando. This great location is also a dog park. It was suggested by Maria and Blake, who wanted to bring along their Chocolate Lab, Sir, for some of the photos.

I had a fabulous time with this gorgeous couple, who will be getting married later this year, and hope that you enjoy these pictures.

Scott Kelby linked to my website this morning from his blog, and as a results, I’m getting a lot more traffic than usual.  One of my goals in blogging about Photoshop World (PSW) was to offer future attendees a chance to read about the classes and instructors that they may be considering to attend.  I found myself hitting a lot of old posts about PSW prior to attending this, my first PSW.

So, if you have any thoughts or insights about a particular class or the event as a whole, I’d love it if you would post them in the comments!

The Summerlin House at Thornton Park

Several weeks ago, I had the fortune to photograph Trina and David’s wedding. Their wedding ceremony and reception took place at The Summerlin House near Lake Eola in the heart of downtown Orlando. This large estate, built in 1915, is perfect for weddings and receptions. Affiliated with the Veranda Bed and Breakfast, the Summerlin House has several large courtyards that can be utilized. The Veranda offers quaint lodging options to house out of town guests or as a wedding suite.

The bridal suite located upstairs in The Summerlin House, has several spacious rooms – perfect for the bridal party to get ready.  And downstairs is a warm and comfortable setting that can be used to host cocktail hours or small receptions.

For more information on The Summerlin House, please visit their website.

Fashion Portraits with David Cuerdon

Day 3 was the final day of Photoshop World and things were definitely slowing down.  I attended a small session on the expo floor by glamour and fashion photographer, David Cuerdon, from Chicago. He discussed how to use backgrounds and effects to make senior portraits and fashion photographs more appealing / trendy.

Funny Things Around Photoshop World

As a side note, while walking around Photoshop World, you encounter many funny things.  I found Rick Sammon, author of 34 different photography books, underneath the escalator working on his Podcast, Digital Photography Experience.

The first non-expo session I attended this day was by Vincent Versace, a photographer out of Los Angeles.  With several tricks in Photoshop, he was able to do some amazing lighting tricks to turn an otherwise dull image into something more powerful.

I realized from this class that Photoshop is not something that can be mastered overnight.  He took us through a long series of steps to make an image look amazing.  Unfortunately, his skills left me lost about half way through the presentation.  However, I may consider picking up one of his books to help further my education.

Romancing the Landscape

The final session I attended as part of Photoshop World was Romancing the Landscape by wildlife and nature photographer, Moose Peterson.  Moose, true to the nature of wildlife photography, never uses Photoshop to enhance his images.  However, in this class, he showed how he does use Photoshop in some occasions to enhance his landscape photographs.

And, with that, Photoshop World comes to an end. I had a fabulous time, and will definitely attend it again in the future.

Lightroom for Wedding Photographers

For as much as I enjoy photographing a wedding, only a small part of the actual work occurs the day of the wedding.  I spend quite a bit of time in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom after the fact, squeezing any extra juice out of the images.  So this next class was a must-attend.

I attended the Lightroom for Wedding Photographers class first thing in the morning and it was definitely time well spent.  It was taught by David Ziser, who also taught the Wedding Photography Workshop on Tuesday.  Not only did he demonstrate some special techniques, he also shared insight into his processes and workflow.

Seeing the Light

The second session of the day was hosted by Jack Reznicki, a commercial photographer out of New York. He spent a great deal of time going through images he has taken explaining how light can affect your images.

Exploring Elements of Digital Photographic Portraits

Helene Glassman taught a class on the basics of digital photographic portraits.  Having done this for some time, I did find that this class was a bit too basic for my taste.  But, it would be great for a beginner.  It covered basic posing techniques using in-class demonstrations.  She also grabbed volunteers from the crowd to assemble for an impromptu group shoot.

Life on Location: Survival Tips for Photographers

This class, hosted by Joe McNally was very similar to his books, Hot Shoe Diaries and From the Moment it Clicks.  Joe would show a photo and then tell how the picture was taken. We heard stories of Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson’s dad standing in a corn field in case she fell from the balance beam held 9 feet in the air.  Stories of travelling to Canada to take pictures of Phan Thi Kim Phuc, with her son, 30 years after the Vietnam Napalm picture made headlines.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, these were just some of those words.  A very great story time with someone who has seen the world.

Bringing Out the Big Guns

This session showed what power a collection of high-end studio strobes can provide. There was a martial artist present who served as a model.  And the instructor, Joe McNally, was able to freeze him in mid air, perfectly lit by the collection of Elinchrom strobes.  If nothing else, it was great seeing just how fast Joe could be on his feet and how close he worked with his assistant in getting everything put together for the ultimate shot.

Stuff You Need to Know to Be a Photographer

With a class title like this, I had to at least check it out.  Not knowing what this class was all about, I just sat back and observed.  I was completely blown away.  Zack Arias spent an hour going through the basics of what is required to be a photographer.  Photography isn’t about F-Stops and what lenses to buy.  It’s about connecting with the moment… Knowing your gear so well, that it’s not part of your thought process when you go to capture that moment.  Photography isn’t about glitzy sales pitches, GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), high SEO, or marketing.  It’s about people.  It’s about life.

By far, this was the best class I attended, and if you ever get a chance to see Zack in action, do it.

The Art of Digital Photography

By the time the final presentation of the day started, my mind was full of the great knowledge I had learned, inspired by the presentation I had just attended, and drained from such a long day.

On stage were seven fantastic artists.  I call them artists, because they weren’t all conventional photographers.  They each took turn showing off their work.  Each photographer / graphic artist was unique, but what they all had in common is that they are all the pinnacle of their craft.

Below is an image of Wildlife and Nature Photographer, Moose Peterson and Street Photographer, Jay Maisel, during the presentation.

I had every good intention of trying to post these the day of the event. But, alas, lesson learned… Photoshop World leaves no free time.

Keynote

Today was the official kick off to Photoshop World. I arrived to find a much different convention center than the day before — including a massive congregation of people waiting to go down the escalator to the keynote address.  From the back of the group, I overheard someone say that those with Speed Passes could proceed ahead.  I had the good fortune to score one of these Speed Passes upon registering for the conference before they sold out – this pass turned out to be a great option!

After slithering through the crowd and showing my speed pass, I joined others at the location where the keynote would be.  There were over 2500 chairs in this room, and thanking my Speed Pass, I quickly found a seat in row 4, with many of the industry luminaries surrounding me.

Eventually, the show began with a hysterical mockumentary about the music group “NAPP” (National Association of Photoshop Professionals).  NAPP had a very strong resemblance to KISS, however, the icons painted on their faces were  associated with Photoshop.  Clever.  The members of NAPP included Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski, Felix Nelson, and others.  We then witnessed their “reunion concert” where they performed their hit, “I Want to Photoshop All Night and Retouch Every Day.”

Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3
As part of the keynote presentation, Adobe unveiled Photoshop CS5.  Several of the features demonstrated left many with their jaws on the floor.  The “Content Aware” feature yielded amazing results.  On April 12th, there will be a major announcement for Photoshop CS5 (which some are falsely reporting as its release date).  Instead it is more likely to be the announcement of new features in the entire CS5 suite (and perhaps the announcement of a release date).

Lightroom 3 Beta 2 was also announced – and the additional features including tethered shooting, improved noise reduction, and video management – had many wanting to pull out their credit cards and get it now.

Make an Online Portfolio Now

The first class I attended was taught by Rafael “RC” Concepcion on easily creating an online portfolio.  I had watched another class on this via KelbyTraining, and this took it a few steps further.  Although the class was good in demonstrating all of the tools available to simplify the process, I felt it didn’t touch on some important topics, such as having a website that is indexable for search engines and works for a large percentage of the userbase.

Many Uses of a Seamless Background

This was a fantastic presentation by Atlanta commercial photographer Zack Arias. It showed the versatility of using rolls of white paper to create many different looks.  With the proper lighting, he was able to turn the background white, grey, black, and even red.  The point of this class was that you didn’t always need to spend tons of money on fancy backdrops.  Sometimes something simple can achieve the same affect.  The class also had a model shoot that took advantage of the new tethered shooting in Lightroom Version 3.

Expo Floor

There were many different vendors on the expo floor – including different print and album fulfillment companies – and I spent a great deal of time visiting and meeting with them.  There were also many vendors selling the latest in photography gear and many manufacturers demonstrating their products.

Below is an impromptu demonstration by Joe McNally, legendary National Geographic and Life Magazine photographer, at the Manfrotto booth.

Photoshop World Expo - Joe McNally

Tomorrow is the official start of Photoshop World. However, there were nine different pre-con classes offered today. I had the opportunity to participate in David Ziser’s Wedding Photography class. David is a legend when it comes to Wedding Photography, and has been shooting weddings in the Cincinnati, Ohio area for over 40 years.

David is a great teacher and photographer, and he demonstrated many of the principles that are also in his recently release book, Captured by the Light.

After our initial lecture we had the opportunity to photograph images around the Orange County Convention Center. David showed how to find beauty and grace in what many others would consider a industrial business setting. From there, we travelled to St. Jude’s Catholic Church in the Dr. Phillips area of Orlando. This is a smaller, but very pretty church with beautiful bright stained glass windows. We then headed back to the convention center for more conversation.

It was one of those classes where anyone from a 40-year pro to a first-day shooter would glimmer many nuggets of great information. After class was over, I had David sign my book which has definitely gotten a read or two.

As much as I enjoyed the instruction by David (who can somehow fit 24 hours of material into 6), I am a little put off by other students in these classes who find it in their best interest to elbow their way to the front always and take hundreds of pictures.  Common courtesy when attending classes: get your shot and then give others a chance.

Below are just a few of the images that I captured along with some pictures that show the educational portion.  A big thank you to David Ziser and his wife, LaDawn, for their hard work. Thank yous also go to Damian, the hardest working wedding photography assistant for a Tuesday afternoon, and to Kayla and Michael, two fantastic and easy-going models.

My day continues tomorrow with the official kick off of Photoshop World. Please come back for an overview of more cool classes – and more photos!
